Its is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Oliver Hughes at the weekend.
Oliver was a pioneer of the independent beer scene who founded the Porterhouse pub chain. We had some of their ales at our early festivals and we visited the brewery when it was in the Porterhouse in Parliament Street.
Oliver was only in his mid fifties, clearly someone who has gone too soon.

This is a great time-lapse from our 2015 Belfast Beer and Cider Festival came together. Huge credit to the many (and all unpaid) volunteers you see help with setup, tear down and running of the festival. Its hard work but we are looking forward to the 2016 festival already!
Good Beer Guide pub, the Sunflower, in Belfast’s Union Street faces an uncertain future.
It is situated in the area included in the Northside Redevelopment project, and an outline planning application is in progress.
The bar is an excellent venue for music, poetry, local breweries and real ale. Its loss would be a major blow to the area.
If people would write to councilors, MLAs, MPs, and visit the pub to show support, it will show that demolishing this bar is not acceptable.
Latest issue is now on line – see The Ulster Ale link on home page
